For years, sailing from India to the Maldives meant either a long repositioning cruise or a connecting flight. That's changing. From October 2026, Cordelia Cruises is running its first-ever international sailings straight out of Kochi to Malé and on to Colombo, and it's a genuinely new option for anyone who would rather board a ship at home than fly out. Here's what the Kochi to Maldives cruise actually looks like, what it costs, and the paperwork you'll need now that this is an international trip.
The new route, and when it starts
This is fresh. Cordelia's flagship, the Empress, begins its Kochi international itineraries on 25 October 2026. It's the first time an Indian cruise line has offered a direct sailing from Kochi to the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The route runs Kochi to Malé, then Colombo, then back. So you're not just getting the Maldives. Sri Lanka's capital is folded into the same trip. For travellers in the south, that's a real convenience. No long haul up to Mumbai first.
How long, and how often
There are two ways to do it. The headline is a 5-night sailing that leaves Kochi every Sunday and returns on Friday, which gives you time in both Malé and Colombo. If that's too much to carve out, there's also a shorter 2-night weekend cruise, out on Friday and back on Sunday. What it costs
Cordelia's 5-night Maldives itinerary starts from roughly ₹1,50,000 per person. Treat that as a floor, not a fixed price. The real number swings with your cabin, how many share it, and how close to departure you book. An interior cabin off-peak is one thing. A balcony room over the holidays is another entirely. It's international now, so bring your passport
This is the big change from a domestic cruise, and it's easy to forget. Because you're sailing to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, this is an international journey. You'll need a valid passport, and it should have a good few months left on it before expiry. Indian citizens generally get a free visa on arrival in the Maldives, but Sri Lanka requires an ETA (electronic travel authorisation) sorted before you go, so don't leave that to the last minute. When to go
The season does the deciding here. India–Maldives cruises run roughly from October through March, which lines up neatly with the calmer, drier weather across the region and the launch date itself. That's also peak travel season, so the earlier sailings tend to book up. If you're set on a specific date, especially over the winter holidays, reserve well ahead.
What's in the fare, and what isn't
Your base fare covers the essentials: your cabin, most meals on board, and the onboard entertainment, which on Cordelia means shows, casino, pool deck and the usual cruise-ship spread. What it doesn't cover is worth knowing before you get surprised. Shore excursions in Malé and Colombo, drinks packages, the spa, gratuities, and your flights to Kochi are all extra. Bookings for the Kochi international sailings are already open through Cordelia's own website and authorised travel partners. Go direct to the operator's site to see live dates, cabins and fares, confirm which sailing includes what you want, and read the fine print on cancellation.
