Two cautions. Google published these ranges in September 2025 from data on earlier years, so they describe a pattern and not a promise. And the "lowest point" is an average across past years. Your route can bottom out earlier or later.

Our chart: Google's 2025 Thanksgiving range counted back from each 2026 travel day.

Is it too late to book Thanksgiving flights now?

No. Today is 66 days before a Tuesday, November 24 departure, and Google's low-price window opens in a week. You have passed the Labor Day mark that The Points Guy named as the point when it expected fares to start climbing. That's a risk warning, not a price cliff.

Start tracking your route today. Set a Google Flights alert for your exact dates, then buy when a fare fits your budget.

Why do experts disagree on when to book Thanksgiving flights?

They measure different things. Google reports when average fares were lowest. Travel sites give a deadline that limits your risk. The advice agrees more than it seems: every source below lands between late August and Halloween, and none says to wait until November.

Read together, they leave a clear middle: buy after Google's window opens on September 26 and before Halloween. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so Friday, October 30 is the practical last day.

Will Thanksgiving flight prices go down if you wait?

The evidence says no. Points Path found that last year Thanksgiving fares climbed every month starting in July, with the sharpest jump in mid-September, so waiting saved travelers essentially nothing. Fares start higher this year, which makes a late drop an even weaker bet.

Hopper's booking guide adds a warning for holiday flights in general: prices can increase by almost double in the last three weeks before takeoff. That's Hopper's claim for holiday travel as a whole, not a Thanksgiving-only figure, so treat it as direction and not a number to plan around.

Why are Thanksgiving flights so expensive in 2026?

Points Path data reported by The Points Guy shows Thanksgiving cash fares running 9% to 13% above 2025. Across all flights, the government's airline fares index is up 23.4% in twelve months. Jet fuel at $4.71 a gallon is the main pressure, and airlines say they're cutting their least profitable flights.

Don't add the two figures together. The 9% to 13% is Thanksgiving search data over a few weeks. The 23.4% is a national average across every kind of trip, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Points Path put Thanksgiving near 13% in August and at 9% to 13% in early September.

What else lowers the price of a Thanksgiving flight?

Flexible dates save more than any booking trick. Google's report says Monday to Wednesday flights run about 13% cheaper than weekend flights, and a layover saves about 22% against nonstop. The day of the week you buy on matters far less, as the table shows.

Going estimates that departing on the holiday itself saves 15% to 30% per ticket, according to Yahoo's summary of its advice. Which days are crowded is a separate question. When should you book based on your trip?

Match your own dates to the table below. Fixed dates should buy inside the window, before its low point, while flexible dates can track longer. The windows come from Google's range, and the advice column is our judgment.

Your trip

Our advice

Dates

Fly out Tue, Nov 24 or Wed, Nov 25, dates fixed

Buy before the low point if a fare fits

Sep 26 to Oct 20 (Tue), Sep 27 to Oct 21 (Wed)

Fly out Sat, Nov 21 to Mon, Nov 23

Start earlier, the window opens first

Sep 23 to Oct 17 (Sat), Sep 25 to Oct 19 (Mon)

Fly home Sun, Nov 29

Buy by the low point, it's the busiest day

Oct 1 to Oct 25

Dates can move

Track now, then shift to Monday to Wednesday if a fare drops

Alert today, buy by Oct 30

Three or more seats on one flight

Buy at the front of your window

From Sep 26

The last row is judgment, not data. Several seats at one price sell out sooner than a single seat.

International trips are the gap. We found no separate Thanksgiving window for them. Points Path reports international holiday fares up 16%, so if you're flying abroad, we'd buy at the front of the domestic range.

Should you rebook if the price drops after you buy?

Only inside the first 24 hours, as a rule. Under 14 CFR 259.5, an airline must let you cancel within 24 hours of booking for a full refund if you booked at least seven days before departure. After that, your fare's own rules decide, and they differ by airline and fare class.

When would we book?

For a fixed-date Thanksgiving trip, we'd buy between September 26 and October 20, as soon as a fare lands near the lowest we'd tracked. We wouldn't go past Friday, October 30. Google's window runs to October 31, but this year's higher fares tilt the risk toward waiting costing more.

  • Flying out Tuesday or Wednesday: watch from now, and buy by October 20.

  • Flying home Sunday, November 29: buy by October 25.

  • Today's fare already fits your budget: buy it. Nobody can name the exact low.

What are the limits of this data?

Google's ranges come from its September 2025 report, which used data from January 2021 to August 2025. They describe earlier years, and the report gives one range for Thanksgiving, not one per route or airline. Points Path is a private fare dataset, so we can't check its method.

The airline fares index is a national average for all flights. Our dates are arithmetic on Google's ranges, counted back from each travel day. We haven't checked them against live fares, and we make no prediction of any specific fare. The Hopper figure applies to holiday flights in general, and we found no Thanksgiving-only version of it.

Quick answers about booking Thanksgiving flights

How far in advance should you book Thanksgiving flights?

Google's data says 24 to 59 days before departure, lowest at 35 days. For a Tuesday, November 24 flight that's September 26 to October 31. The Points Guy says early to mid October is normal, and earlier this year.

When is the best time to buy Thanksgiving airfare?

Between the day Google's window opens and Halloween. For Tuesday, November 24 that means September 26 to October 30, and we'd aim for October 20 or sooner. Buying earlier costs little, and buying later has cost travelers more.

Are flights cheaper on Thanksgiving Day?

Going estimates 15% to 30% per ticket for flying on the holiday itself, per Yahoo's summary. Our TSA analysis also shows Thanksgiving Day is the quietest US flying day of the year. Check your exact route, because savings vary.

Are flights cheaper after Thanksgiving?

Monday to Wednesday flights run about 13% cheaper than weekend ones, per Google, so Monday or Tuesday after is cheaper than Sunday. Sunday, November 29 is the busiest day in our TSA analysis. Buy the return by October 25.

Will Thanksgiving flight prices go down?

The evidence we found says no. Last year Thanksgiving fares climbed every month from July, and waiting saved essentially nothing. A fare alert can still catch a dip, so track your route and buy when it fits.

Does booking on a Tuesday save money?

No. Google found Tuesday only 1.3% cheaper than Sunday, and Hopper's lead economist Hayley Berg calls the Tuesday rule a common myth. Book when the fare fits your budget.

Can you cancel a Thanksgiving flight after booking?

Within 24 hours, yes, if you booked at least seven days before departure. After that, your fare's own rules apply. Check the change and cancel terms before you pay.
